I led the redevelopment of the museum’s website across content strategy, design and web development.

The museum is located in a heritage building, home to Australia's first parliament. Rooms are recreated to look just as they did at the time alongside contemporary exhibitions.

The website had an outdated design and obsolete content. Audience research showed visitors were confused about what the museum offered but raved about it once they visited. My goal was to design a site that showed the historic and contemporary side by side and the joyful experience of visitors in the space.

We created a design that was contemporary but timeless to hold the museum's content as it grew. The typography and layout is designed to be impactful but not to overshadow the content. I simplified the site by removing redundant content and creating a structure related to the audience's key needs.

The site had almost no imagery and used dense curatorial language to explain it's exhibitions. I invested in natural photography and video that reflected the heritage nature of the building and showcased visitors in the space. I rewrote all the core pages of the site in engaging and accessible copy.

The website also had a large online audience. A lot of this content was significantly out of date but receiving a lot of traffic. We worked with curators to update this content as well as improve SEO across all articles. We developed an editorial strategy focused on producing authoritative and reliable explainer content that met this need.

The site now reflects the iconic cultural status of the institution, is easy for visitors to navigate and is simple for content editors at the museum to use.
