I led the redevelopment of the museum’s new website across content strategy, design and build.

The website had an outdated design and held years' of disorganised content. In my audience research I found visitors were confused about what the museum offered.

The museum is a historic building with rooms recreated to look just as they did in the '80s and a museum with contemporary, fun and interactive exhibitions for all ages. My goal was to design a site that showed the historic and contemporary side by side and the joyful experience of visitors in the space. We created a design that was contemporary but timeless to hold the museum's content as it grew. The typography and layout is designed to be impactful but not to overshadow the content.

The site was organised around the museum's internal departments and used museum jargon which was creating confusion for visitors. I simplified the site by removing redundant content and creating a structure related to the audience's key needs.

The site had almost no imagery and used dense curatorial language to explain it's exhibitions. I invested in natural photography and video that reflected the heritage nature of the building and showcased visitors in the space. I rewrote all the core pages of the site in engaging and accessible copy.

The website also had a large online audience. These visitors were discovering the site through search, look for answers about democracy and Australian political history. A lot of this content was significantly out of date but receiving a lot of traffic. We worked with curators to update this content as well as improve SEO across other articles. We developed an editorial strategy focused on producing authoritative and reliable explainer content that met this need.
